Brahms’ Violin Concerto with Sinfonia of Birmingham

sinfonia-of-birmingham

In May I had a big pleasure of performing Brahms’ Violin Concerto in Birmingham with Sinfonia of Birmingham and Keith Slade. This Concerto is one of the biggest and most well known of all violin concertos and it is very demanding for the player due to its intensity, depth and musical maturity. However, it is a very rewarding experience for me as a soloist to be able to join into the most remarkable orchestral accompaniment, which makes this masterpiece very special. The energy of Sinfonia of Birmingham was present throughout the entire performance and I truly enjoyed playing with them.

Mari Poll may look willowy and delicate but there was nothing unwontedly fragile about her playing of Brahms’ violin concerto. When Brahms pits his soloist against the orchestra the young Estonian was never swamped, always projecting strongly but without compromising her full, warm and rounded sound. In the demanding cadenza her technical assurance was combined with ardour and delicacy. Poll was particularly impressive in the concerto’s many meditative and lyrical moments — her stratospherically high entrance in the slow movement was quite magical. Slade and the orchestra provided strong support with a telling oboe contribution.
